The Johnnie Mae Farm, located in the Renaissance Pointe Neighborhood at 2518 Winter St., opens its Farm Stand this Friday, June 21 from 4 to 7 p.m.
The Farm Stand will be open Fridays throughout the summer months and will offer vegetables grown on-site, which could include: red and green tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, collard greens, cherry tomatoes, radishes, herbs, zucchini, cucumbers, beans, peas, carrots, potatoes, okra, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, lettuce, beets, garlic, spinach, onion, and eggplant. Cash, credit and SNAP will be accepted.
Operation of the Johnnie Mae Farm is a partnership between the City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services and the Purdue Extension - Allen County office. In 2015, the Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services completed the historic renovation of former fire station #9 and equipped it with a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, which is available for rent or use by community groups. This spring, the City installed new mounded planting beds, which will enable staff and volunteers to harvest even more fruits and vegetables for neighborhood residents to enjoy.
In addition to the Farm Stand on Fridays, Johnnie Mae Farm will offer the Power of Produce (POP) Club for youth ages 2 to 18. On July 12, 19 and 26 and August 2, 9, and 16 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., youth can take part in a variety of fun activities and earn market dollars to spend on produce.
Finally, residents can also sign up for a healthy cooking class called Our HEALing Kitchen, which is sponsored by the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation and Parkview Health. The classes will meet for eight evenings in July and August and participants will learn how to cook healthy meals using produce available from the Johnnie Mae Farm.
