(August 2016) The Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission recently approved investing $50,000 in tax increment financing dollars to enhance the railroad elevation at Clay and Main streets. This elevation is important because it serves as a gateway into the downtown arts district.
The scope of work includes:
• Cleaning
• Painting
• Tree removal
• Traffic control during construction periods
• Pedestrian and street lighting and
• Electrical work.
A 300-foot mural will also be painted along the northern side of the elevation and metal dancers will be installed on the overpass. The dancers will be illuminated by synchronized lights to create the illusion of movement. The City collaborated with Arts United and Design Collaborative to create the design.
The elevation project is part of the Front Door Fort Wayne plan, which is a 10-year plan to transform the City’s primary corridors and gateways. The plan was developed with input from a 14-member citizen advisory committee and was adopted by City Council in June 2012.
Additional funding for the project will come from previously approved Legacy funds.
