The Summit City Match Pop-Up is part of the larger Summit City Match South Calhoun Pilot Program, a competition to “match” businesses with vacant building space on South Calhoun Street between Murray Street and Rudisill Boulevard.

Pop-ups come in many different forms – art installations to retail establishments – but the one common theme is that they are temporary. A pop-up could be open for one weekend in connection with a big event or occupy a storefront for several weeks, with the look and feel of an established business. It is possible that a pop-up could transition to a permanent business at the same location or elsewhere.

The Pop-Up grand opening will coincide with the City of Fort Wayne's 2019 Open Streets on Sunday, July 14th. During this block party-style event, South Calhoun Street will be closed to vehicular traffic and filled with pedestrian-oriented games, activities, and live music. Pop-Up businesses will also be featured on-site that day for an entrepreneur-focused after party.

Pop-Up Benefits

Pop-ups offer benefits to the tenants and the landlords and have been successful both in terms of producing full-time tenants and revitalizing communities.

Pop-ups accomplish these main objectives:

  • Recruit or grow full-time tenants
  • Spark public and private investment
  • Enhance the neighborhood commercial corridor experience


  • Recruit temporary pop-up businesses and art installations to activate the space at little to no owner cost.
  • Market the space and neighborhood to prospective tenants at no cost to you.
  • Recruit full-time rent paying that pay rent at no cost to you.
  • Provide an opportunity to apply for a “gap” grant to support a future build-out (if applicable).


  • Test your business concept, product or marketing approach without the full investment or risks associated with starting a new business.
  • Obtain valuable feedback on your product or service from real customers.
  • Gain a better understanding of what it takes to operate a successful long-term business.

Eligibility Criteria

Summit City Match is looking for building owners, businesses, entrepreneurs, and artists that will provide impactful, sustainable contributions to our economy and our neighborhoods.  Here’s what you can do to participate:


  • Provide free or reduced rent to temporary pop-up businesses and artists (tenants typically pay all operating expenses).
  • Specify the amount of time pop-up users can occupy the space.
  • Complete the Summit City Match related agreements/leases that specify tenant and building owner parameters and commitments.


  • Have documented goals and needs including budget, equipment, marketing, set-up, support, etc. (Individuals selected for the pop-up opportunities will have a strong understanding of their customer base and thought through how much time they will need to invest to be successful.)
  • Apply for the Summit City Match Pop-Up.  The application deadline is May 31, 2019.

Application Confirmation:
